MD Nichrome is a display typeface based on the typography of paperback science fiction from the 70s and early 80s. Rather than imitating any single typeface of this era, it aims instead to capture elements from several.
Originally released as a work-in-progress design through Future Fonts, MD Nichrome is now complete, and is available in 16 styles — eight weights, from infra-light to ultra-black, plus a matching set of obliques.
Designed by Rutherford Craze for Mass-Driver. Thanks to Luke Charsley, the team at Future Fonts, and everyone who licensed the in-progress versions of MD Nichrome.
A large x-height adds gravity to the lowercase, in line with the distinctive caps
The relative proportions of round and squarish letters vary across weights
Eight weights, each with matching obliques, plus a variable font for even finer control
Super tight spacing allows for maximum impact, especially in the boldest weights
Subtle ink traps improve legibility and rendering performance, on screen and in print
Mix & match stylistic alternates to radically change the typeface’s look and feel
